There's more to do in third-person games. Platforming/traversal gameplay would be difficult to do in first-person. Mirror's Edge was fairly good in this respect, but imagine performing the climbing mechanics in Uncharted 2 in first-person. Not so good, I bet.

Maybe you shouldn't reduce the success of one game to just one element. Try being a little open-minded. I also recommend looking up how game development works.
More games are third person than third. But can't forget about Halo, Resistance, KZ2, Oblivion(if you play it in FP,) Fallout 3(if you play it in FP,) Bioshock, CODs, Half-Life games, L4Ds. I think that's enough to invalidate your point.
